Republican Advocacy Group Dumps $3 Million into Anti-Obamacare Political Ads

One Nation, a political advocacy group with ties to Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell, launched a flurry of political ads in 9 states urging lawmakers to hurry up and repeal and replace Obamacare. The T.V. ad campaign is $3 million alone, along with some radio ad buys thrown in for good measure.

The new ads come in two flavors: “Fix,” which praises vulnerable Republican Senators who originally voted against Obamacare, and “Disaster” which targets vulnerable Democrats up for re-election in 2018 – primarily in states that Donald Trump ended up winning.

Each of the ads starts off the same way: “Obamacare is a disaster,” the narrator says as a quote from a local newspaper appears on screen, typically about how expensive Obamacare is for the people in that state.

Interestingly, every single one of the ads claims that people have lost coverage under Obamacare. And while it is true that in the early days of the Affordable Care Act (Obamacare) some insurers discontinued certain types of healthcare plans that collectively covered millions of people, those people did not lose their ability to find coverage elsewhere. An inconvenience to be sure, but far from being prevented from getting insurance altogether. Generally speaking, the uninsured rate declined dramatically thanks to Obamacare. But then again, this ad isn’t really aimed at those people – since many of them probably don’t want to repeal the act if it means they will lose their insurance.

“For people who liked their coverage before this mess; deductibles through the roof,” the narrator in each video continues. “We’re paying more and getting less.”
