A startup wants voters to engage in text message conversations with the campaigns that reach out to them – and they’re using an artificial intelligence assistant to do it.

Convos, which launched last year under the name PubSent, is betting that, by starting more open-ended conversations with voters, campaigns can deepen the impact of their texting programs, the company’s co-founder and CTO Andrew Missey said.

Instead of spamming recipients with a “big block of information followed by a link” to a campaign website or event page, he said, an AI virtual assistant can have back-and-forth conversations focused on answering voters’ questions about a candidate or cause.

What stands out here isn’t just the novelty of AI-driven texting—it’s the opportunity to restore meaningful, two-way communication in a space that has become saturated with one-sided messaging. Voters have grown numb to mass texts because they feel impersonal and transactional, and this model attempts to reverse that by creating dialogue rather than noise. That said, the success of this approach will depend heavily on trust. Transparency about AI use is a good start, but campaigns must ensure that these interactions remain grounded in accurate information and consistent values, not just automated responsiveness. Technology can enhance outreach, but it cannot replace authenticity. If used responsibly, tools like this could help campaigns reconnect with disengaged voters—but if overused or poorly implemented, they risk becoming just another layer of digital clutter in an already crowded communication landscape. ~Political Media Inc.
