Deepfake Detection Effort Aims to Help Chart a Path For Campaigns to Authenticate Digital Content

A public-private partnership in Utah aims to help campaigns combat deepfakes by authenticating the content they publish online.

Authentication of content is an area where some cybersecurity experts believe there is a gap in the campaign industry and startups have sprung up to meet that need.

For instance, Garrett Kinsman recently launched an app called Click to help campaigns authenticate digital images or videos. In Utah, academics at Utah Valley University (UVU) are working in partnership with local startup SureMark Digital Identity Services to provide content authentication services to each party-nominee seeking one of Utah’s four congressional seats and the open Senate seat.

The growing threat of deepfakes is a clear reminder of the dangers posed by unchecked technological advancements, and while efforts to detect these deceptive tools are necessary, we must remain vigilant. Conservatives should be wary of any so-called "authentication" measures that could be used as a pretext for censorship by Big Tech. The risk here isn't just about detecting deepfakes—it's about ensuring that these efforts don’t become a means to silence conservative voices under the guise of combating misinformation. We must demand strict oversight to prevent this technology from being weaponized against political discourse, ensuring that the fight against deepfakes doesn’t infringe on free speech or manipulate the political narrative to favor one side.
